The plants nearby will ‘listen’ to the signals and then activate their defense mechanisms.

Volatile organic compounds emitted by Sagebrush will alert surrounding plants to produce defensive chemicals, making them poisonous to outside attackers.

Sometimes it's observed that plants of different species, for example, wild tobacco, also seem to listen in to the sagebrush signals and also ramp up their fighting strategies.

So plants don’t just listen to their species, but also 'eavesdrop' on conversations of other plants.

This is one of the realest ways plants can survive.
